Check out the fall display of pumpkins and squash for sale at Darnell Farms, a family run business just east of Bryson City on Highway 19 at the Tuckaseigee River bridge.

Weekly Fall Color Reports
Beverly Collins, Jonathan Horton and Kathy Mathews report that fall has definitely arrived in Asheville through the Highlands, as does Dan Pittillo, who has been forecasting fall colors in the Cullowhee area for decades. At lower elevations, colors should be vibrant this week through the weekend; I would include the Lake Lure/Chimney Rock area in this prediction, too.

Pigeon Forge Parade Marks Silver Anniversary of Salute to Dolly Parton
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (May 2010) – Pigeon Forge’s annual springtime salute to hometown superstar Dolly Parton has a special aura this year, and the name tells it all. May 7 (Friday) is the date of the Dolly Parton 25th Anniversary Homecoming Parade.
“Interest started bubbling up as early as January,” said Sherri Kirby, special projects coordinator for the Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism. “People really want to be part of a silver anniversary.”
This is the 25th year of operation for the Dollywood theme park and the 25th parade honoring Parton, which the City of Pigeon Forge produces.
A color guard from Boy Scout Troop 110 will lead the way along a 2.5-mile route on the Parkway. Behind the Boy Scouts will be more than 100 floats, bands, equestrian clubs, twirler groups, dance teams and other parade units.
Of course, the most anticipated float will carry Parton, who grew up just a few miles outside of Pigeon Forge and is the namesake of Dollywood, the area’s largest seasonal employer and Tennessee’s most visited tourist attraction.
The theme for the 2010 parade is “Celebrate the Dreamer in You.”
Marching bands from Pigeon Forge High School and Sevier County High School, Parton’s alma mater, are among the music providers, while Shrine groups from London and Shepherdsville, Ky., and members of the Red Hat Society will add their special flair.
Entertainers from many of Pigeon Forge’s theaters will ride on special floats. Other entrants include the Knoxville Zoo, Zorb Smoky Mountains, the Foothills Antique Tractor and Engine Club and a Wells Fargo stagecoach.
The parade will start at 6 p.m. at Traffic Light 6 and end at Traffic Light 3.
“Each year’s Dolly Parton Homecoming Parade is a grand celebration of what’s great about America. It’s Pigeon Forge’s way to publicly thank Dolly, and it’s also a way to celebrate family, neighbors and fun,” said Leon Downey, executive director of the Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism.
Complete information about Pigeon Forge is available online at MyPigeonForge.com or by calling toll-free to 1-800-251-9100.

Asheville, NC Makes Barron's Top 10 List
Coming in at #9, Asheville North Carolina makes Barron's Top Ten Places for second homes. Nestled in the mountains of North Carolina, Asheville offers a four-seasons lifestyle with just enough culture and good restaurants to keep urban-withdrawal pangs at bay. Some homebuyers come from the Northeast, and many come from Florida to beat the heat. The locals call them "halfbacks," since Asheville is halfway up the East Coast. The town has a university and a thriving art scene. We like the 1920s-vintage Tudor homes in the Biltmore Forest district, once part of the adjacent Biltmore Estate. The funky Grove Park neighborhood is also worth a look.

West Virginia Summer Escapes
Pocahontas County: 5 State Parks, Unlimited Adventure
No matter your outdoor interest, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, is bound to have an activity to satisfy it. With five state parks offering everything from historic train rides and boating excursions to hiking and biking trails galore, you'll find plenty to explore.
Railroad Rides
You can start your discovery at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, where starting in May historic train lovers can climb aboard an old logging train, guided by a Shay's steam locomotive, to the top of Bald Knob – the Mountain State's second-highest peak at 4,842 feet. The round-trip ride takes about five hours (there's a shorter trip halfway up the mountain), but the nearly 360-degree views of the Alleghenies from the top are well worth the journey!
If you're looking to beat the winter blues now, however, bring your bike to Cass, and take a weekend jaunt down the Greenbrier River Trail, a 78-mile bike trail on a former C&O railroad bed between Cass and Lewisburg. With less than a one percent grade, this relatively level trail is a great option for bikers of all ages and skill levels and offers constant scenic views of the Greenbrier River and surrounding mountains. It also features various access points, allowing for day trips as well as overnight camping along the way. If you're looking to mountain bike, paths that branch out along the way lead to more adventurous trails.
Hiking and History
About halfway down the Greenbrier River Trail and easily accessible just west of Hillsboro off U.S. 219 is Watoga State Park, where overnight camping and lodging are available. If you only have an hour or two, take a hike up the one-mile Arrowhead Trail, which begins at the park's Riverside Campground and offers a steep trek through a lush stand of rhododendron to the Ann Bailey lookout tower. The tower provides westward-facing views of Little Levels, a scenic valley plateau. Or rent a paddleboat or rowboat and enjoy an afternoon fishing on the park's 11-acre lake.
From Watoga, head south to Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, the site of West Virginia's last major Civil War battle in 1863. The battlefield has several short and easy hiking trails, including a trail through a high elevation cranberry bog and trail access to Civil War trenches and small cave entrances. At the top of Droop Mountain, an observation tower offers northward views of Hillsboro and surrounding mountains, as well as shaded picnic areas and playgrounds
Pocahontas County Rocks!
A few miles farther south is Beartown State Park, a 107-acre park with an elevated boardwalk that winds through an unusual forest of dramatic rock formations and boulders composed of Droop Sandstone. The park is also reportedly home to a number of black bears who love resting in large nooks and crannies formed by the rocks. An easy hike through the rocks gives one's imagination the opportunity to run wild, as crevasses, cliffs and caves create a natural castle in quiet woods.
For more information on these attractions and other things to see and do throughout the area, contact the Pocahontas County Convention & Visitors Bureau at 800-336-7009 or visit www.NaturesMountainPlayground.com.

Pigeon Forge ‘Sets Up Camp’ for Festival of Cowboy Poetry, Western Music, Chuckwagon Cooking
10th ‘Saddle Up!’ includes autograph session with James Drury of ‘The Virginian’
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (February 2010) – Cowboy poets, western singers and chuckwagon cooks are just over the horizon from Pigeon Forge, Tenn., preparing for the 10th celebration of Saddle Up!, a perhaps unexpected celebration of cowboy ways east of the Mississippi River.
Saddle Up!, Feb. 25-28, 2010, is the last major component of Pigeon Forge Winterfest, a four-month season of activities that started in November. The entire Winterfest celebration is on the American Bus Association’s list of the Top 100 Events in North America, and Saddle Up! is an American Cowboy Magazine “Best of the West” event, one of 101 recognized annually.
Like stars over a clear prairie sky, the entertainment lineup sparkles with Don Edwards, Waddie Mitchell, R.W. Hampton, Dave Stamey, Ray Doyle and Jeff Gore. Two western swing dances will get guests showing off their best two-stepping techniques.
The pop culture side of the cowboy life will be featured through appearances by James Drury and other stars of “The Virginian,” the 1962-1971 hit TV Western. “The Virginian,” the first 90-minute Western, told the story of the fictional Shiloh Ranch near Medicine Bow, Wyo.
Autograph sessions and question-and-answer opportunities are planned with Drury, Roberta Shore, Gary Clarke and Randy Boone. Drury appeared throughout the series.
A competitive chuckwagon cookoff is another Saddle Up! highlight. Teams of chuckwagon cooks will prepare an authentic trail hand lunch for guests’ enjoyment—and the critical evaluation of judges.
The closing event is Cowboy Church, a non-denominational service preceded by strong coffee and a chuckwagon breakfast.
Admission information: Concert day passes are $20 per day and $50 for the weekend (free through age 17). The chuckwagon cookoff lunch, chuckwagon breakfast and western swing dance are $5. Admission to “The Virginian” event is free.

West Virginia State Parks Offer Affordable Family Fun
Discover fun indoors and out at West Virginia State Parks this winter and early spring. From hiking pristine trails or taking a bird walk to trout fishing or warming fireside in a cabin or cottage, a variety of activities make for affordable getaways now – or in any season.
Winter offers a unique opportunity for hikers, says Jim Phillips, a naturalist at Pipestem Resort State Park.
"A winter hike or walk is a good time to discover those plants and birds that are evergreen or ever-present. If you're just learning about birds or even ferns, winter is the best time to start because there are not as many species to observe. You learn the basics and then build on what you learned in winter months."
Phillips and other park naturalists encourage participation in the Great Backyard Bird Count, Feb. 12-14. Phillips also conducts eagle surveys in the Pipestem area and leads special hikes, like the Bluestone Turnpike Hike and River Trek, throughout the year. Visit www.pipestemresort.com for more information.

Winter fun is easy to find in North Carolina
NC’s mountains are home to the East Coast’s highest ski slopes and its biggest snow tubing park, and there are plenty of places to go sledding, skating and even ice climbing. If you’re ready to hit the slopes, go to www.goskinc.com for the latest ski and snow conditions.
Looking for something a little less snowy? North Carolina has that covered, too. Hiking, fishing, kayaking, and bird watching are popular winter activities at many of our coastal state parks, and three of our piedmont cities offer fast-paced professional hockey action for sports fans of all ages. NC has something for everyone… even in the colder months!

Hoot Like an Owl, Take a Hike at Wilderness Wildlife Week in Pigeon Forge
Salute to Great Smoky Mountains National Park is January 9-16
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (January 2010) – More than 230 programs, almost 60 hikes, more than 150 expert presenters and dozens of volunteers are ready for outdoor enthusiasts to arrive for the 20th presentation of Wilderness Wildlife Week, Jan. 9-16, in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
Wilderness Wildlife Week is an eight-day extravaganza of talks, demonstrations, presentations and hands-on classes about Great Smoky Mountains National Park and other outdoor topics. Some people attend just for the opportunity to hoot like an owl on an “owl prowl.”
The City of Pigeon Forge stages the event, and all activities are free.
Indoor programs are at the Music Road Hotel and Convention Center. Transportation to and from all hikes and excursions is from the convention center, too.
The first day’s schedule of 27 programs includes a four-hour nature photography workshop, a talk about the history of LeConte Lodge, a session about fishing in the Smokies and a special children’s program about comparing human senses and abilities to those of wild animals. Almost 20 programs designed for children are spread through the week.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park Superintendent Dale Ditmanson is scheduled to give opening remarks, and the first day will end with a photography show from Ken Jenkins, the originator of the idea for Wilderness Wildlife Week.
A new program for 2010 is the Listening Post, a project of the Smoky Mountain Storytellers Association. Wilderness Wildlife Week guests are invited to share a story with a storyteller and receive a free recording of that tale. The Listening Post will be open from 2-4 p.m. daily.
